As Community Liaison at HOW², I work alongside individuals and families as they navigate complex systems, advocate for their rights, and seek fair and positive outcomes.
Over recent months, HOW² has supported people across a range of areas, including housing, income support, immigration, local government, healthcare, and family welfare. This work often involves helping clients understand unfamiliar processes, communicate with service providers, and ensure their circumstances are properly understood.
One recent case involved a client from a former refugee background whose benefit had been stopped following a misunderstanding about the cultural and religious significance of a Muslim Nikah ceremony. After researching the relevant cultural, religious, and legal considerations, the team prepared a detailed submission for the Ministry of Social Development’s Benefit Review Committee, and I was able to support the client at the review.
Following the review, the original decision was overturned, the client’s benefit was reinstated, and back payments were approved. This outcome demonstrated the importance of culturally informed advocacy, particularly when systems may not fully recognise the traditions and circumstances of the people they serve.
We have also helped several individuals and families secure affordable housing and supported a family through the District Court process to obtain welfare guardianship for two young children following the loss of their mother. This helped provide greater certainty around their ongoing care, safety, and wellbeing during an extremely difficult time.
As a Justice of the Peace who speaks several languages, I am able to provide support that is accessible, professional, and culturally responsive. My role is not only to help people understand complex processes, but also to ensure they feel heard, respected, and confident in taking the next steps.
These outcomes reflect HOW²’s ongoing commitment to delivering compassionate and effective services. Through advocacy and practical support, we can help strengthen individuals, families, and the wider community.
